We used Derwent World Patents Index® (DWPISM) data to measure patent activity for each industry during the calendar year. Only unique patent inventions were counted, providing the truest picture of innovation activity. The 12 areas selected for this report are based on the main areas of patent activity in 2009, as witnessed through the proprietary DWPI classification and coding systems.
